My Life with Ankylosing Sponylitis

A friend of mine asked me to say a few things about my life with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), while at a bit of a loss of what to say about it, as it would probably be more apt to say, "Tell me about your life..." as I have lived with AS all my adult life it's been what has shaped me into the man I am.

When I was younger it started when I was having difficulty moving in the morning and had back pain, for no apparent reason, I'd see the doctor but by the time I'd see him I would be starting to feel more mobile and feel a bit silly about bothering them, this carried on for ages, as I would feel better as the day went on, I carried on. I knew something was wrong but the Doctors did not know what was wrong... powerless would be the word for how I felt, perhaps the Doctors felt the same, but for all they could tell I was fit and well, so I guess they didn't give it a second thought.

One of the days I felt absolutely awful so I made an appointment at the Doctors, it's hard to remember how old I was, but I think I was still at school, so was probably 15, the Receptionist told me that I would only be able to see a Locam Dr. so was unsure that they would have a handle on my problems... I am glad to say that I was way off the mark, he listened to what I said, and then I was completely surprised that he had an inkling of what I may be suffering with, when he said Ankylosing Spondylitis, it sounded a funny name so I was a bit confused...

When I was told it was a form of Arthritis I was shocked, but also grateful that I had a name for what I had so could get cured... oh wait, that was the next bombshell... cure, there is no cure, just management, and in those dark times the only form of management was anti inflammatory pills and exercise, ok so I have pushed ahead slightly, the next stage of course was getting properly diagnosed with a blood test and xray.

To be honest I carried on with my life after that plodding along getting through School and Collage, just taking anti-inflammatory pills when things were bad, I didn't bother doing my daily exercises, if I had perhaps I would be better now, but as a young lad I had better things to do, seeing my mates, playing on mega drive, smoking and drinking, getting up to the normal stuff that kids do... for that I do not regret.

As time went on, in the late '90s so I would in my early 20's I was concerned that I was getting worse, well I wouldn't be getting any better would I?? It was suggested that I should have some extensive physio treatment / hydrotherapy that would involve a week in Hospital at Cannock, the course helped me a great deal, at the time I was in a flourishing relationship with a wonderful woman who later on became my Wife.

Unfortunately the exercises that I learnt at Cannock must have fell on deaf ears as I continued to carry on as I was before, I did not see that anything could help, there was no cure, I had the message that they could not do anything to help, so I gave up on trying, and carried on living my life in pain, I didn't go the the doctors, I had a repeat prescription when I ran out of drugs I just got more. They could not tell me anything new, so I stopped listening. I think I went about seven years without seeing a doctor or anybody about my AS. I had accepted that I will be in pain, so it becomes normal.

The two main positive points in my life was my Marriage and the birth of my lovely Daughter, it's no stretch of the imagination to say that priorities change when you have kids, I was worried that AS would stop me from being a proper Dad that was the single most frightening thing in my life, I was at a stage that I thought if I stop how I am I could cope but if I start to get worse I may not be able to do the things that I want to, at about this time I started to use facebook, and wondered if many other people have AS, I was surprised to how many people who was in the groups, so I joined a couple of the groups, this was the first time I had heard of Anti-TNF, most was talking about what side effects they was having, like losing vision and other scary stuff.

However this got me thinking that there must be things must have moved on with treatment as I still thought there was nothing that could be done, after talking to some people on facebook, some who have become really good friends I decided to get the ball rolling, I printed of some info on Anti-TNF, and went to see my GP and just asked them to refer me back to my consultant as it had been so long, and I wanted to explore the possibility of going on Anti-TNF and/or some Physio as I can't get any worse otherwise I'll have problems with working and looking after my family.

I saw my consultant who was very hopeful that Anti-TNF would help me, and had very possitive things to say, unfortunately was not so positive about the funding as that may be more difficult, but said that we should do this in stages and get me to cannock for an assessment, after assessment it was decided that I would meet the criteria to get onto the drug; however funding was still in question, as the Primary Care Trusts would not fund it without NICE approval.

Eventually NICE approved the drug, and I should be aloud to go on it, but weeks passed and still phone call after phone call, and no joy, eventually I was recommended to get in touch with the PAL team, who chased things up and got me funding, it was not the PCT that was holding things up but a bean counter at the hospital trust, I was angry but re leaved.

This treatment has given me my life back, not only has it halted the progress of the curvature of my spine and had some improvement I am now pain free most of the time.

It is hard to explain but a fog has lifted.

I am not cured, but it helps.

The Caching Marathon

The 26th April 2009 may be known as the date of the London Marathon, but for a few geocachers in the Midlands it will hold a memories of a different milestone event, although it shows some similarities.

Firstly for the uninitiated what is geocaching, basically it is searching for hidden boxes that are hidden all over the world by the use of GPS receivers to hone in on the spot where they are hidden, for more information visit http://www.geocaching.com

Back to the the 26th April, we started off at stupid o'clock from Birmingham to travel to Blackburn / Bolton for about 7am where we met up with another 2 cars worth of geocachers who was looking forward to a days caching and hopefully hitting the golden 100 finds in one day.

Roll call time, Stokesy, Graham1875, Team Balders, Pete3, [Monki], Blue Nora, The Washers, [MF]taz and AJIgeo also known as Richard, Graham, Kev, Pete, Ash, Nikki, Ron, Lee and Alan we should also not forget Sophie the GeoDog the 10 of us walked 21.8 miles and found 84 geocaches while walking in Lancashire a place that is not known for its flatness.

While some of us was more physically prepared than others for the day I was worried if I could make it, I certainly would not have considered doing this trek last year, as I suffer with an arthritic condition Ankylosing Spondylits that causes my spine to fuse together and can leave me in chronic pain, for a few months I have had staggering results with my Anti-TNF treatment that has given me a new lease of life, I had not noticed how much pain I was in, until it had been taken away.



We started this quest at 7:30am where we found our first cache under a pine tree, and finished at 6:00pm with a cache called Last Man Stands, an apt name for the final one, this took us climbing up banks, navigating through boggy terrain, moooving cows, birthing sheep, (well we saw a lamb that had just been born) climbing hills, climbing a lot of styles. It was also a lot of fun as is always the way when you get a group that have a common interest you always have something to talk about.

While we did not hit our 100 milestone for a day's caching the day was a success and anyone who caches would not be able to say that we 'only' did 84, not only was it 84 caches, they was 84 quality caches, most of them had been placed by one geocacher L E G E N D who has also placed a lot more caches in the area, each one worthy of the hunt.

I looked at it not as one big massive walk but as lots of very small walks, setting the gpsr at each cache and it saying that the next one is less than 2 tenths of a mile away spurs you on and makes the journey a lot easier.

However there are advantages to caching with a 3 year old, the noise projecting from the child made the sheep get up and find somewhere else, I don't thint the sheep would have been worried by our (adopted for the day) goehound as he looks a bit like a sheep as its a mini-poodle. A bit late in the day today but it was a strange day, it started at 03:24 getting up before the alarm (that I found out later the volume was right down so it wouldnt have woke me anyway) that I had 03:30 ready for the start of the 4amproject that has been organised by @karenstrunks who over the last few months has been working very hard to get this off the ground.



I found out that taking photos at night is not as easy as it looks, and I really need to get to grips with my camera and work out how to use some of those features that you don't need to worry about in the daytime.

Today also brought me to the world of flickr that of course I was aware of and visted to view others photo's but I did not have an account before today, I'm glad I have as it looks like fun.

Day out in the park

Had a lovely day out with Vicky today, Liz was otherwise engaged in some retail therapy and craft related malarkey the initial plan was to go swimming but after the couple of days drama with my two teeth being extracted, I thought we would go to the park.

(I didn't blog about my extraction but suffice to say, I had tooth ache > dentist > extraction.)

We had a leisurely morning with watching cartoons, the new Ben 10 followed by star wars clone wars, SW in CGI works well, and I may eventually get Vicky to watch the films soon. Once SW:CW had finished we set off.

I thought it may be a bit of a long walk for a little one given that it's about a mile up a big hill so I had a back up of Play Area @ Kinstanding Circle, not needed as she was happy to carry on even when she saw the hill, we had her scooter with us, but that seamed to be just for me to carry.

Once at the park, we went straight to the play area.

Not sure how long she spent in there but she was having mad fun, Eventually we went to kick the ball about in the woods, (also she wanted a comfort spot, great things trees)

This photo was taken just as she was getting fed up with me taking pictures so she walked off.

Time for a ice lolly, I felt incredible that it was Mid February and it was warm enough to sit down without a coat and have an Ribena push up ice lolly thingy.

After that we went for a walk up to Longmoor pool to see the ducks, this is where the scooter comes into play.
Funny thing that she kept doing was kept stopping and sitting down on her scooter, a quick ride up to the Pool where the presence of birds was certainly abundant.
Another trip back to the play area, where she left my sight for a bit longer than I liked, walked about the area twice staring to get worried, then spotted her standing by the swings looking a little sad... soon cheered up when I found her and she had a play on the swings, It can't go any faster Vicky, it's just a swing.

15:47 Sat nav took me on a merry meander on this one looked on the map and worked out where I should be, walked up the road it gives a real end of the world feel to it except for the hum from the passing traffic on adjacent roads.
